Medical Weight Loss
FAQs
Medical weight loss involves supervised treatments to help individuals lose weight safely and effectively. This can include medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g., Semaglutide and Tirzepatide), alongside nutritional counseling, exercise guidance, and behavior modification.
GLP-1 medications, like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide, are part of a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists. They help regulate appetite, improve blood sugar control, and support weight loss by mimicking a hormone that affects hunger signals in the brain.
Both Semaglutide and Tirzepatide work by slowing gastric emptying, which helps you feel fuller for longer. They also reduce appetite and cravings, leading to lower caloric intake and gradual weight loss over time.
Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are FDA-approved for treating type 2 diabetes and have been shown to be effective in weight loss when used under medical supervision. However, they may have side effects, and it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if they’re right for you.
These medications are generally prescribed to individuals with a BMI over 30 or those with a BMI over 27 who have a weight-related medical condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.
Semaglutide targets GLP-1 receptors, while Tirzepatide is a dual agonist that targets both GLP-1 and GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) receptors. Tirzepatide may offer enhanced benefits in weight loss due to its dual mechanism of action.
The duration of treatment varies based on individual goals and progress. Some patients may use the medications short-term, while others may continue long-term to maintain weight loss and prevent weight regain. We will help create a personalized treatment plan.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort. These symptoms often improve as your body adjusts to the medication. More serious side effects are rare but can include pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, and kidney problems.
Both Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are injected subcutaneously (under the skin), usually once a week. We handle the injections in our facility as well as show you how to properly administer the injections at home.
Results vary by individual, but many people begin to notice changes within a few weeks of starting treatment. Significant weight loss typically occurs after several months of consistent use, coupled with lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.
While GLP-1 medications help control appetite, combining them with a balanced, reduced-calorie diet will enhance your results. We provide a customized meal plan so you learn how to eat for the long and get the best results while taking the medication.
Stopping the medication abruptly may lead to weight regain, so we recommend a gradual decrease as we update your nutrition and exercise program so you can discontinue or use as little of the medication as possible with minimal or no weight gain.
GLP-1 medications may interact with other prescription drugs, especially those used to manage diabetes. Make sure to inform us about all medications you’re taking to avoid any potential interactions.
These medications should not be used if you have a history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. Additionally, those with a history of pancreatitis should consult their healthcare provider before starting treatment.
To begin treatment, schedule a consultation by clicking on the appointment tab. We will assess your health, discuss your weight loss goals, and determine if Semaglutide or Tirzepatide is right for you. Once prescribed, we provide ongoing support throughout your weight loss journey.
